Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off

Join us for this year’s Best in the West Nugget Rib Cookoff, the 2011, 23rd annual, will run Wednesday, August 31 through Monday, September 5, once again transforming the Labor Day holiday on Victorian Square in downtown Sparks into a must-attend culinary, music, craft, and family end-of-summer affair. Daily hours for all the fun – the rib cookers, live entertainment, special kids area and multiple city blocks of craft vendors – are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday – Sunday; 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday.

Record crowds have made the decision to add the sixth day worthwhile. Attendance estimates show it to be the biggest cook-off to date, with more than 500,000 visitors and more than 100 tons of ribs served. Large activities within the event, including a world-championship rib-eating contest, and top-notch entertainment ñ not to mention the best BBQ in the country ñ all came together to draw massive amounts of people to Victorian Square.

The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off is not only one of the largest rib competitions in the world but also one of the best family events on the west coast! Enjoy one of the largest arts & crafts fair in Northern Nevada, a huge Kids’ Area loaded with carnival rides and inflatable games, rides, and slides.

We kick-off the event each year with our annual Rib Eating Championship featuring some of the top professional competitive eaters in the world. Come out and watch the world’s #1 eater, Joey Chestnut, defend his title. This is one event you do not want to miss. The Rib Eating Championship will take place on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 6pm on the Main Concert Stage.

Returning to this year’s Cook-off, the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), now known as Major League Eating (MLE), the governing body of all stomach-centric sports, will host the fifth annual Best in the West Nugget World Rib Eating Championships at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, on the Main Concert Stage. Please check back soon for updated 2010 information.

The country’s best competitive eaters will vie for $5,000 and the title of World Champion. The IFOCE conducts more than 90 events annually, including the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, NY. It’s estimated the top competitors will consume nine-plus pounds of meat during the 12-minute competition. Three-time winner, prolific gurgitator Joey Chestnut, is expected to attend, along with more than a dozen other top-flight athletes. Last year the legendary world No.1-ranked eater consumed 9.8 lbs. of rib meat in 12 minutes to set a new world record!
